A Brief Introcduction to the This University
This University, one of the key universities in China, was founded on August 28th, 2001 by merging Jiangsu University of Science and Technology, Zhenjiang Teacher’s College. This University, situated in Zhenjiang, Jiangsu—a well-known historical and cultural city in southern China, has an area of 210 hectares with a total floor space of over 800,000square meters. Its library has a collection of over1.6 million copies of books.
This University, a comprehensive university featuring science and engineering and with teaching and research work equally emphasized, is among the first colleges and universities authorized to grant doctor’s and master’s degrees in China. In terms of comprehensive school-running ability, This University is among the top hundred universities in China. At present, there are eight major disciplines covering engineering science, medicine, social science, economics, administration and education. The 23 schools and faculties are offering 3 post-doctoral programs, 2 Class A doctor’s degree-granting disciplines, 10 doctor’s programs, 33 master’s programs, 62 bachelor’s programs, 6 engineering master’s programs, 7 provincial key disciplines, 1 state-level key discipline, 2 provincial-level engineering centers and provincial-level key labs.
There is a staff of over 3,300 (with an additional staff of over 2,000 in the affiliated hospitals), among whom are 5 engaged academicians, nearly 50 supervisors for doctor students, over 150 professors and senior professional personnel with associate senior professional tittles. The total number of full-time student enrolment is over 23,000, among whom are over1,200 graduate students.
Throughout the long school-running process, This University has been adhering to the school-running principles of “ being human-oriented and teaching-centered”. Meanwhile, This University also substantially strengthens the training of students’ scientific research ability. Its teaching quality has been widely and favorably received by the society. Students from This University have made brilliant achievements in such national-universal tests as English, maths, physics, mechanics and computer and in the “ Challenge Cup” National Contest of College students’ Extracurricular Academic, Scientific and technological Works.
With a view to serving consumers, This University puts a high premium on the research of new and high technology and the commercialization of research achievements. The total amount of vertical and horizontal scientific research funds ranks among the top fifty in all the colleges and universities in China. Over 300 items of scientific research findings are awarded PRIZE FOR SCIENTIFIC AND TECHNOLOGCAL ADVANCES at state, ministerial or provincial level. Over 100 items of achievements are granted state patents, ranking among the top 30 in all the colleges and universities in China. As a result, This University is honored the title of “The Top Ten State Patent Institutions in Jiangsu”.
This University lays great emphasis on moral education and the building of socialist spiritual civilization. Sample Contract
Ⅰ. Party A _This University_wishes to engage the service of Party B ___________. The two parties, in a spirit of friendly cooperation, agree to sign this contract and pledge to fufil conscientiously all the obligations stipulated in it.
Ⅱ. The period of service will be from the day of _, __ to the ___ day of __, _.
Ⅲ. The duties of Party B (see attached pages)
Ⅳ. Party B’s monthly salary will be ¥_ ___ yuan RMB, 70% of which can be converted into foreign currency monthly.
Ⅴ. Party A’s Obligations
1. Party A shall introduce to Party B the laws, decrees and relevant regulations enacted by the Chinese government, the Party A’s work system and regulations concerning administration of foreign experts.
2. Party A shall conduct direction, supervision and evaluation of Party B’s work.
3. Party A shall provide Party B necessary working and living conditions.
4. Party A shall provide co-workers.
5. Party A shall pay Party B’s salary regularly by the month.
Ⅵ. Party B’s Obligations
1. Party B shall observe the laws, decrees and relevant regulations enacted by the Chinese government and shall not interfere in China’s internal affairs.
2. Party B shall observe Party A’s work system and regulations concerning administration of foreign experts and shall accept Party A’s arrangement, direction, supervision and evaluation in regard to his/her work. Without Party A’s consent, Party B shall not render service elsewhere or hold concurrently any post unrelated to the work agreed on with Party A.
3. Party B shall complete the tasks agreed on on schedule and guarantee the quality of work.
4. Party B shall respect China’s religious policy, and shall not conduct religious activities incompatible with the status of an expert.
5. Party B shall respect the Chinese people’s moral standards and customs.
Ⅶ. Revision, Cancellation and Termination of the Contract
1. Both parties should abide by the contract and should refrain from revising, canceling, or terminating the contract without mutual consent.
2. The contract can be revised, canceled, or terminated with mutual consent. Before both parties have reached an agreement, the contract should be strictly observed.
3. Party A has the right to cancel the contract with a written notice to Party B under the following conditions.
(1) Party B does not fulfil the contract or does not fulfil the contract obligations according to the terms stipulated, and has failed to amend after Party A has pointed it out.
(2) According to the doctor’s diagnosis, Party B cannot resume normal work after a continued 30 day sick leave.
4. Party B has the right to cancel the contract with a written notice to Party A under the following conditions:
(1) Party A has not provided Party B with necessary working and living conditions as stipulated in the contract.
(2) Party A has not paid Party B as scheduled.
Ⅷ. Breach Penalty
When either of the two parties fails to fulfil the contract or fails to fulfil the contract obligations according to the terms stipulated, that is, breaks the contract, it must pay a breach penalty of US $ 500 to 2, 000 (or the equivelant in RMB).
If Party B asks to cancel the contract due to events beyond control, it should produce certifications by the department concerned, obtain Party A’s consent, and pay its own return expenses; if Party B concels the contract without valid reason, it should pay its own return expenses and pay a breach penalty to Party A.
If Party A asks to cancel the contract due to events beyond control, with the consent of Party B, it should pay Party B’s return expenses; if Party A concels the contract without valid reason, it should pay Party B’s return expenses and pay a breach penalty to Party B.
Ⅸ. The appendix of this contract is an inseparable part of the contract and has equal effect.
Ⅹ. This contract takes effect on the date signed by both parties and will automatically expire when the contract ends. If either of the two parties asks for a new contract, it should forward its request to another party 90 days prior to the expiration of the contract, and sign the new contract with mutual consent.
Party B shall bear all expenses incurred when staying on after the contract expires.
Ⅺ. Arbitration
The two parties shall consult with each other and mediate any disputes which may arise about the contract. If all attempts fail, the two parties can appeal to the organization of arbitration for foreign experts affairs in the State Bureau of Foreign Experts and ask for a final arbitration.

Appendix
The appendix of the contract is an inseparable part of the contract and has equal effect.
The Duties of Party B:
1. Party B works five days a week and the working load per week is 16 teaching periods (45 minutes per period).
2. Without Party A’s consent, Party B shall not render service elsewhere or hold concurrently any post unrelated to the work agreed on with Party A.
3. Classes should be conducted according to the syllabus and teaching plan.
4. In preparation for class teaching, the teaching contents, speed and method should be taken into consideration according to the level and learning ability of majority students.
5. During teaching, please write legibly and speak clearly. Modern electrical audio-visual education is strongly recommended, if possible.
6. Close cooperation is encouraged between Party B and their Chinese counterparts to promote teaching quality.
7. Apart from classroom teaching, Party B is expected to do some occasional supplementary work, such as sound recording, translating, teaching material revising and proof reading, etc.
8. Proper homework and classroom test should be assigned and given to students to help them digest what they have learned in class.
9. Students’ homework and tests and papers should be corrected and marked. Keeping notes of the mistakes by the students for explanations later.
10. Classes should be started and conducted on time. Examinations should be given according to the regulation of the university. Students’ grades should be given to the corresponding school or department before Party B leaves.
11. In order to maintain fairly good teaching order. Party B is generally not allowed to reschedule his\her classes at will unless permission will be granted from Party A.
12. Evaluations will be conducted twice by the University (one in November and another in April) per year to appraise the teaching work of Party B. Therefore, a close cooperation is expected from Party B in this regard.
13. Party B is responsible for the costs of any physical examination completed prior to coming to China. The University is responsible for the cost of any second examination for Party B if requested after arrival in China. Party B is supposed to provide original results\ paperwork of any medical exam.
14. Any violations of the Chinese laws and regulations may lead to the termination of this contract by Party A. In that case, Party B should be responsible for the penalty and the expenses back home and Party B should leave this university within seven days since the termination of the contract.
15. After the termination of the contract, Party B should leave this university within two weeks.
The Duties of Party A
1. Party A will provide Party B with free housing arrangements including adequate kitchen and bath facilities.
2. Salary is to be paid to teachers around the 10th day of each contracted month except that February in winter holiday or July and August in summer holiday, salary will be paid after the new semester begins. Foreign teachers should be paid from contract starting date to the contract completion date, including winter and\or summer holiday breaks.
3. Party A will provide Party B with a free and direct one-way international air ticket home for a 6-month contract or a return international air ticket for a 2-semester contract when Party B finishes his or her teaching work at the University. If Party B who would like to sign a 2-semester contract comes directly from another city in China to This University, Party A will cover the train tickets from that city to Zhenjiang as well as the one-way international air ticket back home.
4. There are two telephone systems installed in each apartment, the one for contacting the relevant coordinator on campus is provided free to the foreign teacher, the other is self-supported for contacting the teacher’s family, both systems of use should be fully explained by the University so no misunderstandings will be incurred.
5. The foreign teacher should pay the flow charge of his/her access to the Internet if a computer is provided in each apartment.
6. Party A will pay Party B 1,100yuan(RMB) as travel allowance each semester and the travel allowance will be issued at the end of each semester.
7. Party A will cover at most 1000 Yuan (RMB)’s worth of medical care according to the actual happenings in the Campus Clinic with the guidance of the relevant coordinator during the contract year. Party B is responsible for the cost above and beyond the afore-mentioned value.
8. According to the Regulations written by the Chinese Government and the State Administration of Foreign Expert Affairs (SAFEA), official holidays and school winter and summer breaks\holidays are provided to Party B.
