Brief Introduction
This Institute, directly subordinate to the Education of Jiangsu Province, is a full-time professional institute which aims at fostering qualified professionals working in Navigational Technology, Marine Engineering, Shipbuilding, Electrification Automation Technology, Harbor Management, Economy and Trade, Logistics Management, and Computer Information Technology, etc. Her full-time higher education focuses on the 3-year vocational training education (for students graduated from the senior middle schools). The Adults’ Higher Education and Sailors Training are supplements.
Situated in the famous historical and cultural city --- Nanjing, the institute was founded in 1951. “Be magnanimous as sea, and take on our responsibility bravely; be honest and faithful, and show high aspirations to future.” her motto is an accumulation of history and culture of more than 50 years, declaring publicly that teachers and students in This Institute have been holding the marine spirits, abiding by sincerity, standing high and aiming far.
This Institute consists of two campuses (Jiangning and Baixia) and one field-training base (Banqiao), among which the Jiangning main campus, situated by the foot of Fangshan Mountain, covers an area of 94 hectares and a gross floor area of 350,000 square meters in total. The school-running scale indicates that the institute can hold students up to 12,000, and there are more than 10,000 students at school now.
This Institute offers 21 specialties and 25 professional directions under 10 branches of learning: Navigational Technology Department, Marine Engineering Department, Ship and Harbor Engineering Department, Electrification Engineering Department, Department of Port Transport and Logistics Management, Information Engineering Department, Foreign Languages Department, Department of Humanites and Science, Sports Department and Institute of Continuing Education. This Institute is also proud of having a competent full-time teaching staff of 425 with reasonable structure and great potentiality, among whom the number of teachers with high professional titles accounts for more than 30% and the number of two-certificate-holding teachers accounts for more than 70% of the professional instructors. A number of famous entrepreneurs and scholars at home and abroad are appointed as honorary professors, which is a strong talents support for the institute’s development. This Institute enjoys outstanding achievements in teaching and scientific research. In the past three years, the institute has obtained 10 scientific research subjects at the provincial and ministerial levels. The institute has independently researched and developed teaching and field-training simulation operation equipment such as GMDSS, GPS, and radar, etc. and developed teaching equipment such as turbine simulator and hull segment model jointly with enterprises.
This Institute is well equipped with modernized teaching infrastructure. Her field-training system “basic skill training - artificial simulation operating training - synthetic real ship training” has formed the characteristics of This Institute's talents training. The digitized campus network offers nearly ten thousand information points service. In the school, there are 11 comprehensive experimental field-training centers at school level (artificial training centre of navigation, navigational skill training centre, electrician's electronic experimental center, skill training centre of the metal working, weld skill training centre, logistics artificial training centre, hull skill training centre, and electrician skill training centre, etc.), 1 field-training base at school level, and 1 field-training base at provincial level, which subdivided into marine professional skill training centre and marine artificial training centre.
Close to Changjiang River, Banqiao field-training base with 420 meters long water front has a 10,000 ton-class sea-going vessel named “Ruiyu” which is the only well-equipped teaching practice ship in the state of seaworthiness at home and suitable for 200 people to study, fully meet the teaching demand of the real navigational field training.
This Institute is one of the first navigational colleges in China that implement STCW78/95 International Convention and be confirmed by IMO, and also one of the first colleges in Jiangsu Province that introduce ISO9000 quality control standard into the field of education management. In the past 10 years, continuously being updated and operating effectively, quality management system has gained experts’ praises and formed the distinct management style of This Institute. Insisting on the combination of producing, teaching and researching, the institute has been training the high-quality skill type talents who meet the demand of enterprises. The institute now has established cooperation relationships with 57 enterprises.
The graduates from This Institute are highly appreciated by the enterprises for their devoted spirit, excellent professional skills and solid fundamental knowledge. During the last half century, it has educated and trained more than 100,000 graduates for China’s shipping industry, most of whom now rank high in their respective fields and become the backbone in such circles as sea transportation, shipping business, international trade, harbor management, shipbuilding, etc. Among them we can find some government leaders or labor models in the government organizations or enterprises like COSCO, China Shipping Company, Changhang Group, local shipping companies, Port Authorities, Yangtze Piloting Center, Jiangsu Maritime Safety Administration, etc. The outstanding achievements by our graduates have won great honor and reputation for our institute and become the valuable sources for our future construction and development.
In the 21st century, with the fast development of the global economy integration and the implementation of the STCW 78/95 Convention, the world shipping industry becomes more and more prosperous. It’s a golden opportunity for the development of shipping industry in China, owing to the more frequent foreign trade in China and the distinction for export of labor services transferring to east Asia. All the enterprises are confronted with the acute shortage of hands in shipping field. Consequently, they will highly demand the professional maritime students. This Institute tries its utmost to catch this opportunity, keep the close relationship with the cooperation of these shipping enterprises and enlarge the employment market for all graduates. At the two-way-section Job Fair hold in This Institute every year, as many as over 100 companies and enterprises such as COSCO Group, China Shipping Group, Changhang Group, local shipping companies, shipyards and Harbor Authorities showed up to recruit our students. Our students have always been in high demand. In recent three years, 98% of the graduates sign the contract successfully, many of which work in the international shipping field and gain the substantial salary. The investigation from ISFB (International Shipping Federation) and BIMCO (The Baltic International Marine Conference) shows that in the international seaman labor services market, the demand for the high qualified maritime talents will increase steadily in a long period of time, thus the graduates in This Institute will have a broad and flourish prospect.
