 This University dates back to the 1930s when it was known as Shanghai Dagong Private Vocational School (1933~1951), which was originally established on the bank of Huangpu River in 1933. This University was successively renamed several times in history: Shanghai Mechatronics Industrial School(1952), Shanghai Shipbuilding Industrial School (1953~1970,the first shipbuilding vocational middle school in new China and was moved to Zhenjiang in 1970), Zhenjiang Shipbuilding Technical School (1971~1978), Zhenjiang Shipbuilding College (1978~1993), Eastern China Shipbuilding Institute (1993~2003), and in 2004 it was given the current name of This University. In1999 it was transferred to the administration of Jiangsu Province from the original administration of China State Shipbuilding Corporation and in the same year it merged Jiangsu Jianghai Trade School and in 2000 it merged the Silkworm Industry Institute of CAAS. In 2002 Jiangsu Provincial People’s Government and Commission of Science Technology and Industry for National Defense (COSTIND) agreed to jointly build This University. Thanks to the collective efforts of several generations, This University has become a multidisciplinary comprehensive university featuring engineering subject.
The construction and development of This University have all along been cared for by leaders of our country. State leaders including Zhu De, Wang Zhen, Fei Xiaotong, Li Lanqing and Hui Liangyu, etc. have visited This University successively. In 1988 Zhang Aiping inscribed the name of This University’s library. In 1993 Jiang Zemin inscribed the name of Eastern Shipbuilding College” for This University. In 2003, on the 70th anniversary of the founding of This University, Li Lanqing inscribed: “Hope you can deepen the reform to further improve teaching and research standard and cultivate more excellent talents for our country”. Leaders, such as Ding Henggao, Wang Rongsheng, Zhu Kaixuan, Hu Yanlin and Li Yuanchao, etc. from COSTIND, CSSC, the Ministry of Education, Navy and Jiangsu Provincial government have visited This University successively for inspection and providing guidance.
 Currently, This University has four campus areas, including eastern, southern, western and Zhangjiagang campus areas, and Shanghai Office (southern campus area is an independent college). Its total fixed assets are valued at 935 million yuan, of which is 159.3 million yuan worth of teaching & research instruments and equipments. It has over 13,000 seats in multimedia classrooms and language laboratories, 1.35 million books and over 530,000 kinds of electronic books in library storage.
Currently, it has 1778 instructors and employees altogether, of which are 954 specialized instructors. Hereinto, over 100 instructors have senior professional titles; over 300 have deputy senior professional titles; 1 is an academician of CAE; 18 are doctor tutors; 3 are members of the Teaching Supervision Commission of the Ministry of Education; 3 are provincial excellent subject leaders; One national candidate for "New century hundred-thousand-ten thousand Talents Project", one owns the title of "Jiangsu Province Young Specialist with Outstanding Contributions" , 2 are supported by the Program of Provincial 6th Session Talent Summit; 14 are selected to be cultivated by “Provincial 333 Project”,11 are selected to be youth academic leaders by provincial “Qinglan Project”, 39 are provincial excellent youth instructors; 61 are entitled to the special allowance of the State Council; In addition, This University has 4 provincial excellent academic teams. Since 2000, This University has won 1 national excellent teacher award, 2 national “May 1st” labor medals, 1 national “Women Contribution” model award, 1 Jiangsu Provincial labor model award, 1 Jiangsu Provincial excellent teaching staff award and 1 Jiangsu Provincial new long march frontrunner award.
This University recruits students from 31 provinces (municipalities, autonomous regions) across the country as well as Hongkong, Macao and Taiwan. At present, This University has over 20,000 students, of whom are 1599 post graduates and 16339 undergraduates. The PLA has set up an office in This University for reserve officer selection and training and presently This University has altogether 554 national defense students. Since its inception, This University has fostered over 40,000 various specialized talents for our country and all of them have become the backbone on their fronts and made significant contributions to shipbuilding industry, modernization construction of national defense, national economy and social development.
 Currently, This University has 12 schools (departments) and 47 undergraduate majors and orientations, of which is one COSTIND key major, one is provincial brand major, one is provincial brand construction major, three are provincial feature majors and two are provincial feature construction majors. This University has 1 doctor graduate cultivation station, 27 master cultivation stations, 8 engineering master cultivation fields, 1 agricultural popularization master cultivation field, 1 state key academic cultivation construction station, 5 provincial key subjects, 3 provincial and ministry-level key laboratories,1 provincial public technique service platform, 26 teaching laboratories (centers), 3 provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers.
This University has always attached great importance and given top priority to teaching work and adhered to the belief that teaching quality is the lifeline of This University, and its teaching quality has been improved continuously by deepening teaching reform and strengthening teaching infrastructure construction and teaching management. What’s more, This University has been honored with 10 provincial teaching fruit awards, 17 provincial classic courses and 23 multimedia teaching contest awards in the two recent provincial teaching fruit award appraisal. Since 1998, 3 teachers have won awards in national youth teacher teaching contests and 12 teachers have won in provincial youth teacher teaching contests. This University has all along attached importance to scientific research and formed the research pattern incorporating application research, technical innovation and high-tech fruit popularization. This University has successively undertaken a series of high-level research topics including state 863 high-tech project, state natural science fund, state social science fund and national defense project. Since 2003, This University has altogether undertaken 1784 scientific research projects, of which 183 are above provincial (ministry)-level scientific research projects, and acquired 231.303 million yuan for scientific research outlay(fruit transformation expense excluded). This University has published 4216 articles in domestic and international science publications and meetings, of which 179 (2002~2005) are included in SCI, EI and ISTP, and published 1631 articles in core journals and international academic meetings. This University has acquired 59 authorizations or patents, of which are 21 invention patents and 38 new practical patents and 48 provincial (ministry)-level above scientific research awards.
In addition, This University manages and publishes many academic publications including “JOURNAL OF This University (NATURAL SCIENCE EDITION)”, “OURNAL OF This University (SOCIAL SCIENCE EDITION)”, “CHINA SILKWORM INDUSTRY” and “SILKWORM SCIENCE”, etc.
This University has been striving to push for system reform and actively conducting international educational and scientific exchange and cooperation. This University has successively established partnership with navy political department, CSSC, CSIC, CSI, CAAS, etc. and conducted scientific research and education cooperation with Russia, Ukraine, U.S., France, Australia, India and Japan, etc. and constituted long-term partnership with a batch of famous enterprises such as Jiangnan Shipyard Co., Ltd., etc. During the 70th anniversary of the founding of This University, a cooperative development committee involving over 100 units was set up on the basis of original board of directors of This University. In addition, many enterprises and institutes agreed to jointly build reverse engineering, architectural design and electronic war laboratories, etc. and set up over 20 scholarships such as Lowe’s, TRIBON, TSUNEISHI, CSIC, GSIC and KSEC, etc.

Sample of Contract
. Party A This University wishes to engage the service of Party B as foreign teacher. The two parties, in a spirit of friendly cooperation, agree to sign this contract and pledge to fulfill conscientiously all the obligations stipulated in it.

. Party B’s monthly salary will be 4500 RMB, 70% of which can be converted into foreign currency monthly.
. Party A’s obligations
1. Party A shall introduce to Party B the laws, decrees and relevant regulations enacted by the Chinese government, the Party A’s work system and regulations concerning administration of foreign experts.
2. Party A shall conduct direction, supervision and evaluation of Party B’s work.
3. Party A shall provide Party B necessary working and living conditions.
4. Party A shall provide co-workers.
5. Party A shall pay Party B’ salary regularly by the month.
. Party B’s obligations
1. Party B shall observe the laws, decrees and relevant regulations enacted by the Chinese government and shall not interfere in China’s internal affairs.
2. Party B shall observe Party A’s work system and regulations concerning administration of foreign experts and shall accept Party A’s arrangement, direction, supervision and evaluation in regard to his/ her work. Without Party A’s consent, Party B shall not render service elsewhere or hold concurrently any post unrelated to the work agreed on with Party A.
3. Party B shall complete the tasks agreed on schedule and guarantee the quality of work.
4. Party B shall respect China’s religious policy, and shall not conduct religious activities incompatible with the status of an expert.
5. Party B shall respect the Chinese people’s moral standards and customs.
. Revision, Cancellation and Termination of the contract
1. Both Parties should abide by the contract and should refrain from revising, canceling, or terminating the contract without mutual consent.
2. The contract can be revised, cancelled or terminated with mutual consent. Before both parties have reached an agreement, the contract should be strictly observed.
3. Party A has the right to cancel the contract with a written
notice to Party B under the following conditions:
Party B does not fulfill the contract or does not fulfill the contract obligations according to the terms stipulated, and has failed to amend after Party A has pointed it out.
According to the doctor’s diagnosis, Party B can not resume normal work after a continued 30 day sick leave.
Party B has the right to cancel the contract with a written notice to Party A under the following conditions:
Party A has not provided party B with necessary working and living conditions as stipulated in the contract.
Party A has not paid Party B as scheduled.
. Breach Penalty
When either of the two parties fails to fulfill the contract or fails to fulfill the contract obligations according to the terms stipulated, that is, breaks the contract, it must pay a breach penalty of US$ 500 to 2000(or the equivalent in RMB).
If Party B asks to cancel the contract due to events beyond control, it should produce certifications by the department concerned, obtain Party A’s consent, and pay its own return expenses; if Party B cancels the contract without valid reason, it should pay its own return expenses and pay a breach penalty to Party A.

. The appendix of this contract is an inseparable part of the contract and has equal effect.
. This contract takes effect on the date signed by both parties and will automatically expire when the contract ends. If either of the two parties asks for a new contract, it should forward its request to another party 90 days to the expiration of the contract, and sign the new contract with mutual consent.
Party B shall bear all expenses incurred when staying on after the contract expires.
. Arbitration
The two parties shall consult with each other and mediate any dispute which may arise about the contract. If all attempts fail, the two parties can appeal to the organization of arbitration for foreign experts affairs in the State Bureau of Foreign Experts and ask for a final arbitration.
Attachment of the contract
1. The period of service is fixed for one academic term/year from . , 2007 to , , 2008.
2. Five working days each week, 16 teaching hours per week, participating in the academic activities of the department concerned providing counsel for Chinese teachers upon request, giving private coaching to students for about 6 hours per week.
3. You will be paid 4500RMB for your salary per monthand could be given around trip international air ticket fee for one year contract.
4. During the time of employment, the university will provide him/her with a free furnished lodging with bathroom and kitchen. All the utilities are free. You are offered with all kinds of necessary appliance.
5. You can enjoy the RMB2600 travel allowance each year.
6. You can enjoy the RMB1000 medical allowance. You should make insurance certificate in your home country.
