experience the culture of a 5000-year history
¡¡¡¡Hello,
My name is Tom. I am the principal of New Time English Language
Institute, Shantou, Guangdong, China. I'd like to invite you to
apply for a teaching job with us.
¡¡¡¡As one of the Cambridge Young Learners English schools accredited
by the Cambridge University, New Time is the biggest and best of
its kind in Guangdong province. We have organized CYLES exam five
times successfully and more than 2000 kids have received Cambridge
English certificates.
We also have adults conversational English classes, business English
classes, IELTS classes, etc. The universities in Shantou also invited
our teachers to teach in their English Departments, which give our
teachers more experience in teaching.
¡¡¡¡After six-year hard work, we have more than 4000 students in New
time. There are five branches in other districts of Shantou city.
We are so lucky to be trusted by the students who keep introducing
their friends to come to study.
¡¡¡¡NewTime

have comfortable seating, tables, TV, DVD and whiteboards. All classrooms
are air-conditioned. We use a wide variety of famous teaching materials
and are a well-resourced school.
¡¡¡¡Lane, a
Canadian teacher who has been teaching in China for three years
now helps my school a lot. Not only does he have unique ways in
teaching English, but also he knows how to build up a team of foreign
teachers. As the head of foreign teachers¡¯ department in New Time,
he helps the new teachers adjust to Chinese students and the Chinese
community very quickly. Working in a happy team is one of the important
reasons that most of the teachers are willing to renew the contract
after one-year teaching. We hope to recruit the right teachers and
we also wish them work and live happily in Shantou.

I am sorry that it comes out with strange Chinese charactersJ, we
are still working on the English version. Hope you enjoy the photos
of the school.
A
small introduction to the life in China.
¡¡¡¡I
know that when a foreigner comes to work in China she/he doesn¡¯t
just want to work! She/he also wants to get to know China! Chinese
culture is very wide and rich, there are lots of places to visit
and see like the Great Wall, Beijing, Shanghai, Guilin and many
other places and landscapes.
I know that the salary may look like it¡¯s not much but as the cost
of living here in China is so cheap you can lead a very comfortable
life in the city while saving up money! In Shantou for example you
spend between 1000 and 1800 RMB on bills, food and some occasional
house holding products, which means you would have the rest of the
salary to spend on your nights out and in your trips! Here at New
Time we also organize trips to some interesting places around Shantou
in order to create and promote a team spirit and friendship between
our staff.
¡¡¡¡Our offer
to the new teachers is:
¡¡¡¡Teachers
are provided with furnished accommodation
¡¡¡¡Teachers are greeted at the airport
¡¡¡¡Salary - 5700RMB per month (710 American Dollars), (the living
cost in Shantou is about 230 American Dollars a month. You can save
about 480 dollars per month)
¡¡¡¡Round trip airfare reimbursement
¡¡¡¡Free Chinese course
¡¡¡¡80 RMB per hour if choose to do overtime.
¡¡¡¡Accident insurance
¡¡¡¡11 days Chinese national holiday
¡¡¡¡2 weeks paid holiday per year

¡¡¡¡We are
looking for teachers who are energetic and like to work as a team.
You will need to enjoy teaching children and teens. You will also
teach adults, university students.
¡¡¡¡Please
send me your resume and photos if you are interested in the job.
¡¡¡¡We are
looking forward to hearing from you.

Shantou
Snapshot
¡¡¡¡Shantou
is a harbour city located in the south of China and the east of
Guandong province. The location of Shantou bring it not only pleasant
weather and beautiful seaside scenery, but also unique local culture.
Shantou area is called one of the two ancient culture "refrigeratories"
in China, which means the old traditions and culture disappeared
in many other parts of China are still preserved well in this region.
You can still see the old opera, dragon boat race, fire dragon dance,
Tang dynasty style music, very traditional wedding, etc here in
Shantou area. Also Shantou city is the hub of one of China's five
Special Economic Zones (SEZ). This means that there has been a huge
capital investment in the area, and this is where the contradictions
begin.
¡¡¡¡Our
building, longxiang Dasha is one of the significant buildings in
the relatively newly created central business district. A leisurely
20 stroll away is the 'old city', which is a ramshackle affair with
examples of French and English architecture dating back nearly 200
years, and old temples dating back nearly 1000 years. On one street
you will feel yourself to be in 'old' China, but look up and you'll
see modern buildings in the next street and there are many western
style bars, pubs, restaurants, five-star hotels which make you feel
like home a little bit. The pace here is slower than, say, Beijing
or Shanghai.
¡¡¡¡Shantou is in a tropical region, but don't think of palm
trees. Space is given over to housing which is usually 8-floor apartment
blocks without elevators. In most cases, no one could accuse them
of being attractive on the outside. Inside, however, it can be a
very different story. The Chinese place quite some emphasis on decoration
and furnishing.
¡¡¡¡There are 4 distinct seasons here:
¡¡¡¡Spring
is humid, often reaching the mid-80s in air moisture content. It
can also be quite rainy, but this is not the classic daily tropical
rain.
Summer is not very hot in comparison with other cities in Guangdong
province. The wind from the sea cooler the weather.
Autumn is mild - mid 20s is usual.
Winter is cold - 10 degrees being the lowest but still very crisp
on other days.
¡¡¡¡The
local dialect is Chaoshanhua (pronounced Chow-shan-wah) and has
8 tones instead of the 4 found in Putonghau Mandarin. It is a difficult
language, even for other Chinese. But people here can also speak
Mandarin and Cantonese.
¡¡¡¡Local
culture consists of Gong Fu Cha (Gong Fu Tea) and is one of the
very central parts of the local culture. Shantou is famous for its
seafood and there are many regional delicacies, mostly cooked as
a variety of snacks. Shantou city itself doesn't have many cultural
icons to boast of but short trips to other areas offer lots of sightseeing
opportunities. There are some beautiful temples, the island of Nan
Ao (although a full day trip) is reached by ferry and is quite interesting.
Across the river is a headland with a scenic walk and another interesting
temple. On the Shantou side is an old fort made 200 years ago from
glutinous rice, brown sugar and ground shell. The cannon there protected
the harbour and had an effective range of 16 miles. This fort is
surrounded by a moat and has a training encampment inside its walls,
which are up to 12 feet thick. It takes you one hour to go to Chaozhou,
one of the most famous ancient cities in China. You will be impressed
by the large city wall, beautiful pavilions, blue lakes and bamboo
forest.
¡¡¡¡I
hope you've enjoyed your snapshot of Shantou. |
